Somali Ostrich Struthio molybdophanes

Somali Ostrich Struthio molybdophanes is one of our Northern Specials, a large flightless bird native to the Horn of Africa. It was previously considered a subspecies of the ostrich, but was identified as a distinct species in 2014.

The skin of the neck and thighs of the Somali ostrich is grey-blue (rather than pinkish in the Masai Ostrich)

The population size has not been quantified owing to recent taxonomic splits but is classified as vulnerable
and yes, our Ostriches put the head in sand in case of danger.ostrich2.
